I feel glasdy is a great project. I am currently deploying locally and am looking forward to finding a way to upgrade to glasdy plus to integrate with google home. Just a reminder. We still have KNX module and trivum. That is really a stable and good smarthome.
Hello @vule
Welcome on Gladys !
Gladys Plus is available here:
For KNX / Trivium, we don’t have those compatibilities yet, but we are open to contribution as Gladys is entirely open-source
Don’t hesitate if you have any questions
Yes, I am very satisfied with the project. I am also a developer, currently working on app development with ReactJS and backend frameworks like Express and NestJS. I’m now building an app that runs on this platform, and I’m extremely pleased with its performance and the project’s concept. I would love to contribute to the team’s efforts. I’ll be researching and implementing the KNX module. Of course, this will take time, as the learning curve, skills, and knowledge of this protocol are quite new to me. I’m hopeful!.

Hi @pierre-gilles ,
I noticed that we haven’t integrated Modbus yet. Do we have any plans to integrate it, and is anyone on our team currently working on it?
Hi @vule, no one is currently working on a Modbus integration—I have to admit, I’m not even familiar with it!
Is it widely used in your country? Any reason you’re not opting for Zigbee devices?
I highly recommend Zigbee—they’re affordable and extremely reliable.
Hey @pierre-gilles
First, in a smart home system, for wireless devices, a commonly used standard is Zigbee → hence, Zigbee2MQTT. If we need to transmit over longer distances without requiring high speed, we have LoRa (which is not used for smart homes).
For wired smart home systems, KNX is the standard. HVAC systems or high-end smart home devices often use the KNX standard or at least Modbus.
I run a separate instance of domoticz for modbus for controlling my heat pump, modbus would be a great addition to Gladys. Especially if it was able to parse the registers from domoticz or home assistant add-ons to save reinventing the wheel.
Will Modbus devices be compatible with Matter in the future? We’re currently working on a Matter integration, and I’m hoping it will unify everything!
Essentially, I know that Modbus uses serial ports for communication, with two main types commonly used: Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP/IP. Their transmission and reception mechanisms are quite similar to Zigbee2MQTT.
I think the Modbus and KNX libraries are quite solid. I once tried running a standalone KNX setup, but integrating it into Gladys was a bit challenging for me. However, I believe that for our team, it won’t be too difficult—the hardest part is probably having the actual devices for testing.
Zigbee2MQTT encourages both Gladys and Home Assistant, but I personally prefer Gladys. The only issue is that we are currently missing two important services: KNX and Modbus.
@vule Your team?
And what kind of Modbus/KNX devices do you have at home? Is those protocol popular in Vietnam? I very surprised
No, I mean Gladys team, not just mine. And not only in Vietnam—Modbus, Profibus, and Profinet are industrial communication standards, but they have also been further developed for smart home applications. If we look purely at smart home technologies, we have Zigbee and KNX. The stability and high standards of Modbus and KNX are far superior to Zigbee. Products from Siemens and Simon often use these standards. For high-end HVAC systems, KNX is primarily used due to its significantly higher reliability and stability compared to Zigbee.
Do you have those devices at your place?
I’ve never heard anyone using KNX or Modbus to be honest.
I’m currently working on a Matter integration. Maybe you’ll be able to connect KNX or Modbus devices through Matter
Currently, I have quite a few KNX and Modbus devices. Right now, I’m using a third-party software called iRidium and utilizing the HTTP feature to trigger events. However, it would be amazing if we could support these two types of module services directly.
Additionally, as a developer myself, I’d love to join the team and contribute. My skills aren’t top-notch yet, but if the team is developing with Matter.js, please let me join in, observe, and learn how we implement code from the very beginning. Who knows—maybe I can understand and implement KNX and Modbus support, as I currently have access to these devices.
